Joann Staiger, was a month from her 5th birthday, and lived in the 900 block of Ramsey Street, Baltimore City, MD with her family. She had opened the gate of their backyard to follow her sister (Jacqueline "Jackie" Staiger Bealefeld - Findagrave.com memorial #42960215) across the street. Jackie and a friend had exited the yard beforehand and proceeded to walk across Cross Street and down the alley behind a corner saloon. Jackie did not realize that her younger sister, Joann, had also left their yard and was running to catch up with her. A large truck delivering beer to the corner saloon was parked adjacent to the curb on Cross Street. The driver, Edward W. Schwartz of Woodlawn, did not see Joann running behind the truck when he backed up and ran over her, killing her instantly. Mr. Schwartz was distraught when he realized what had happened; he was a family man with children of his own. The incident was ruled an accident for which he was never criminally charged.

Joann was my cousin; she was a beautiful and sweet child, with blue eyes and blonde hair. Shortly before her death she had spent a week at my family's house while her parents were vacationing in Florida. This was a terrible tragedy that affected us all forever.

Joann was survived by her parents, Ruth Rosalie Church Staiger and Joseph Peter Staiger, Sr.; brother Joseph Peter Staiger, Jr. and sister, Jacqueline "Jackie" Staiger.

Joann is laying in rest beside her maternal grandparents, Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Sanner Church (Findagrave memorial #34411943)and Christian Clautice "Claude" Church (memorial #34411940).
