Mattie Rogers Tynes remembered the Civil War which brought soldiers of both sides past her childhood doorstep on the Natchez Trace. Her account of the Battle of Bryce Crossroads was: "First the Yankee Cavalry came galloping West, then there was shooting and here they came running back East, with the Confederates chasing them."
