Elsa emigrated to America in 1870 with her younger brother, Claus Mordhorst. It seems likely that she came directly to Moline to marry Amos Bergert, who was from the neighboring village in Holstein. Amos may even have paid for her passage. A few years later, another brother, Henry Mordhorst, emigrated and settled in Moline.
Amos and Elsa had eight children. Elsa died in 1928 after an illness of about three months.
