Brownell Funeral Rites Held Today
Funeral services are being held this afternoon here for Mrs. Laura Z. Brownell, prominent Orland resident for the past 51 years, who died at her home Friday morning. Services conducted at the Sweet chapel by Rev. Cook, Corning Episcopal pastor, will be followed by graveside rites in the Masonic cemetery.
Mrs. Brownell was born at Cacheville*, Yolo County, April 1, 1873, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. George Zimmerman. Her father was one of Yolo county's prominent early day physicians and her mother, daughter of the pioneer Woodard family, was the first white child born in Yolo county.
Laura Zimmerman was educated at the convent in Woodland and later attended the Crocker Art school in Sacramento. Her marriage to I. L. Brownell of Orland took place May 12, 1896, and she came to Orland as a bride 51 years ago to occupy the home the groom had prepared for her on the Brownell ranch west of town. Until retirement from ranching a few years ago, the couple had made their home on the ranch through all the years since.
Taking a friendly interest in the Indians who made their home on the ranch and later on the nearby Grindstone reservation, Mrs. Brownell became their advocate. It was due to her work that the old dance house on the reservation was restored a few years ago. A Christmas celebration for those at the reservation became an annual custom due to Mrs. Brownell's efforts and the cooperation of other Orland residents. For over 10 years she served the Northern District Federation of Women's clubs as its chairman of Indian Welfare. She was also a prominent and active member of the Orland Women's Improvement Club, of which she was a charter member.
Surviving her are her husband, I. L. Brownell, one daughter, Mrs. Phoebe Steuben, and a grandson, Walter Brownell Steuben. – Transcribed by E.
