The community was saddened by the death of Mrs. Rex (Valene) Bateman, who was rushed to Salt Lake City Saturday with a brain hemorrhage and died Monday morning, having never regained consciousness.
Services Held at Etna Ward for Valene Bateman
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan 20 at 12 noon in the Etna Ward LDS Chapel with Counselor Jack Ivie conducting for Alice Valene Thorn Bateman, 42, who died Jan 17, 1972 in the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City after a short illness. Burial was in the Etna Cemetery.
She was born Oct 26, 1929 at Springville, Utah, to Vernile E. and Bessie Whitney thorn. She attended grade school at Mapelton and high school at Springville, Utah and graduated from seminary there.
She attended th Brigham Young University in the evenings, at Provo and the McCune School of Music in Salt Lake City. She fulfilled a mission for the LDS church to the Great Lakes Mission in 1951-52. She received her Golden Gleaner Award in 1951.
After returning from her mission she was employed in the church offices in Salt Lake City, then became a teletype operator and file clerk for Arrowhead Freight Lines.
She met Rex Herbert Bateman in April 1956 when he was on Navy leave, and married him Dec 27, 1957 in the Idaho Falls Temple. They made their home in Etna, building a small home by Rex's father's home.
She was always active in the LDS Church when her health permitted, serving aas organist and teacher in Junior Sunday School and MIA in the Springville Ward in Utah and organist of the Primary and Relief Society in the Etna Ward. She was a teacher in the MIA and Primary. She gave organ lessons to all the youth in Etna who were interested.
She loved beauty and found joy in all its phases, especially in Nature, music and in her children.
She dedicated her time and talents to them and her husband. She enjoyed the trips the entire family made together.
A baby boy and her parents preceded her in death. She is survive by her husband, Rex H. Bateman, seven children, Nolan, Wayne 12 Claudia Jane 11, Marilyn 10, Marsha 8, Richard Lindsay 7, Steven Rex 3, and Rosemary 4 months all of Etna three brothers Eugene and Erwin Thorn of Mapelton, Utah and Raymond Thorn of Provo, Utah, and one sister Mrs Kenneth (JoAnn) Marohant of Midvale, Utah.
