Unable to get his mother's permission, he lied about his age to enlist in the Union Army during the Civil War. He served in the 149th NY Volunteers, saw action at Gettysburg, and shortly after that contracted tuberculosis.

Married (first) Elretta [Ella] Wilson. The couple had no documented children despite twenty years of marriage. Ella committed suicide following the death of her mother, and possibly a newborn or infant.

Married (second) Caroline Murray. Father of Helen, Anna, Lyda, James Jr. (stillborn twin of Lyda), George, Mildred, Flora, Levah and Abigail.

Active in the Grand Army of the Republic, the Republican party and the First Baptist Church of Central Square.
