Captain (That was his first name) was born in Flat Rock, Pulaski County. That part of the county became part of McCreary County in 1912. He was the son of Joseph Coffey and Bethada "Ada" Strunk. His wife Lettie McBride in in an unmarked grave close by.

Captain D. (Cap) Coffey, died here at the home of his daughter Mrs. Elmer Davis, October 25. Mr. Coffey was 78 years of age, having been born at Flat Rock, Ky., on Jan. 10, 1872, the son of Joseph Coffey. He had a large number of friends here and was well known, a member of the Baptist church and a good citizen. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Davis of Oneida and Mrs. Arnold Lewis of Eagan, Tenn.; two sons, John Coffey of Oneida and Othel Coffey of Revelo, Ky.; two brothers, William of Oneida and Gills of Revelo, Ky.; 6 grandchildren and a number of relatives. Funeral services will be held here this afternoon at one o'clock at the Oak Grove Baptist church with Revs. Roy Blevins and Leland Thomas officiating.
