John Woodard Hinton Jr. / Sr was raised in the home of William Wimberly as his father died the same year he was born.
In May 1861 John W. Hinton enlisted in the Confederate Army at Camp Moore in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. He was in Company I, 16th Louisiana Infantry under the command of Alfred Sidney Johnston. John was wounded in the right forearm while taking aim in the battle of Shiloh. His commanding officer, Alfred Sidney Johnston, was wounded and bled to death at Shiloh.
John was honorably discharged from the 16th Louisiana Infantry in 1863 and joined Captain A.O.P. Pickens Company of the 2nd Louisiana Cavalry. He was captured at Natchitoches, Louisiana on March 21, 1864, then exchanged in a prisoner exchange on the Red River Landing on July 22, 1864.
After his discharge, when the war was over, he came back to Bienville Parish and on July 30, 1865 he married Angelina Jane "Jennie" Knighton.
