Bert, an American, was a Pilot Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force. On 06 Feb 1941, he sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia to England and was soon assigned to the 131st Squadron of the Royal Air Force. In the fall of 1941 he was transferred to the 71st Squadron. Both of these were Eagle Squadrons and were made up entirely of Americans. In 1942, after America joined the war, Bert transferred to the United States Air Force where he served for the duration of the war and for many years after; he retired a Major.
