Married Sarah Ann Knight Feb. 6, 1862 at Clarke Co., Iowa. They were married by Nathaniel's father. They had three children after the marriage. Sarah had a son, Thomas Porter, before her marriage to Nathaniel.

Nathaniel served in the Missouri Militia during the Civil War-(Union). Nov. 1863-Spring 1865. (Co G, 57th Reg.,)

After Nathaniel died his wife, Sarah, tried to get a widows pension from his military service. She filed pension requests from 1881-1903, (application # 300294) but was always refused by the Federal Government. They said Nathaniel was in the state militia not a federal unit. (this is a large file with a lot of information)

Found the following info, regarding Missouri Militia Members, from the St. Louis Public Library.
Note: Enrolled Missouri Militia Members who were disabled by wounds or other injuries received while "temporarily cooperating with a military unit or units in the service of the U.S." were entitled to receive federal military pensions and benefits if they had initiated a claim for such pensions and/or benefits prior to July 4, 1874. Nathaniel died in May of 1874 and Sarah didn't file for benefits till 1881.
