Alfred (Fred) William Orr was born in Lawrence County, Mo. Alfred W. Orr and Edith H. Dunlap were married 29 Dec 1897 at Fairfax (Atchison, County), MO. They had two children, Helen Pauline (1899) and Frances Anna (1900).

Alfred W. Orr and wife Edith and unnamed 1-year old daughter (Pauline) are on the 1900 Federal Census for Mount Vernon. On the census, sometimes he is Alfred W., sometimes William Alfred; his grandson says he always called himself Alfred William. In 1910 the family was in Columbia, MO and he was an extension agent.

Edith contracted cancer and died in April 1912 in Chicago, where she sought treatment. She is is buried in English Grove Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Fairfax, Atchison County, MO.

Fred married Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Stewart in June 1913. Fred, Elizabeth and daughters Pauline and Frances moved to Livingston, Texas in 1919, where he continued as a county extension agent. Fred and Betty adopted a daughter, Josie Wells Orr in 1921, after her parents died.

Fred retired as an extension agent and later was appointed as Post Master in Polk County, Livingston, TX during the Hoover Administration. Roosevelt did not reappoint him, so after that Fred farmed. He raised various row crops, including peanuts, corn, peas and potatoes (both Irish and red). He was what is now called a "truck farmer" canning produce for his family and carrying the remainder to town to sell to the IG grocery store.

The family farm was almost self -sufficient because Fred grew pear trees, peach trees, plum trees, fig trees and even an apple tree. Fred acquired his father's love of horticulture. The apple tree grew as a result of his grafting roots of a Mayhaw bush (native to southern states) to a green apple tree root. This kept the nemetodes from destroying the apple tree roots and allowed the tree to flourish in sandy Texas soil. The results of this were published in a book written and published by the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College He also grew strawberries, boysenberries, grapes, cantaloupes, watermelons. He filled in with lettuce, radishes, onions, cucumbers, sweet potatoes

Fred raised chickens both for eggs and meat. He was an excellent woodworker, making furniture and in later years, toys for the grandchildren and upon request from the town folks who asked and paid for his products. He made swings, slides, see-saws and various games which required a bit of ingenuity.

Both he and Mary Elizabeth Stewart Orr, whom he was married to for 44 years, were active members of the Presbyterian Church wherever they lived--Del Rio, Carthage, and Livingston, Texas. He was an elder in the church and she was very active in the women's auxiliary. He did not miss a Sunday for over 23 years. A flu epidemic in about 1948 caused him to miss for the first time.

The Women's Auxiliary often met in their home during World War II and Korean Conflict to roll bandages and pack Care packages to send to the soldiers. (Thanks to granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Glazener Shelton for much of this information)

A.W. Orr loved to go to the Orr Reunion in Mount Vernon (first Sunday of August), and would bring watermelon he had grown. In later years, he would urge his grandchildren to sing at the reunion. "How we dreaded that," reports Clarice K. Barnes Amman.
