Alford Adams (written by the clerk as 'Alfred' in the Monroe County, GA Marriage Book A) married Sarah H. Watson in Monroe County, GA on 7 Jan 1836. (Sarah was living with some of her brothers & sisters in Monroe County.) Over time, Alford & Sarah began to move their household across GA and into AL.

By 1840 they are on the Census in Marion County, GA with one male child 0-5 years old.

On her Widow's Pension application for her husband's CSA service, daughter Elizabeth says that she was born in Sumpter County, GA on 8 May 1842, so if accurate, the family must have been in Sumpter County, GA at that time, prior to moving to Coffee County, AL in time to be on the 1850 census.

They are on the 1850 Coffee County, AL Census, enumerated 9 Oct 1850
61. Alfred ADAMS 35 SC
Benjamin HART 25 GA
Sarah ADAMS 33 GA
Jonathan M 10 GA
Elizabeth 8 GA {Elizabeth born 1842 GA
Joseph A 6 AL {Joseph A. born 1844 AL
James T 4 GA {James born 1846 GA
Amanda L 2 GA

The children's birth places here indicate that they were also in AL on 23 Jun 1844 when Joseph was born - although they could have been visiting other kin who had already settled in AL.

They had a total of 7 known children, as their son Benjamin was born in Coffee County in 1852. Benjamin is shown living with them on the 1870 Covington County Census.

Alford (written as 'Alfred' on the land transaction) acquired land by Federal Land Grant there on September 1, 1858 in Coffee County. Note: Federal Land Grants only indicate the original owner, so it is possible that he had already purchased other land from someone else at an earlier time.
Adams Alfred Coffee 21E 3N 14 1858
He also acquired government land on June 10, 1892 in Covington County, AL according to the Government Land Office (GLO) records.

Certainly by the enumeration date (6 July 1870) of the 1870 Census they had moved to Covington County, AL where they are shown with only their youngest son, Benjamin (age 17) still at home.

However, the 1880 Mortality Census-Covington County, AL p 311,
#214-Alfred ADAMS, 73, male, white, married, GA SC SC, farmer, d. DEC 1879* of pneumonia, resident of community for 12 years.

[*NOTE: This is a different death date on the Covington County AL 1880 Census Mortality Schedule than what is shown on the tombstone. if he was age 73, then his birth year would be 1807. But looking at him on the census records, it seems his birth year varies among different census years. Notice that it says he resided in the (Rose Hill) community for 12 years, which means they moved into Covington County in 1868.] I suspect that the tombstone was ordered and placed later, by someone who thought they remembered his death date. Unsure whether the birth date is accurate, either. The mortality schedule has too many details to likely be wrong about the death date.
