5 Feb 2009: Clarence L. Groff, 102, of Palmyra, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, Palmyra. Born March 20, 1906 in Union Deposit, he was a son of the late John C. Groff and Ella M. (Gipe) Groff Trimmer. He was the former owner of C.L. Groff Electrical Contractor, Palmyra. A member of Palmyra Church of the Brethren, he was a Sunday School teacher for 41 years having a total of 586 students. At church he was elected a life deacon; five times served as delegate to the annual conference; was chairman of the building committee for the Christian Education building and assisted the pastors in hospital visitations, anointing, helped in Youth Club and was a counselor for youth trips. Singing with the Gospel Male Quartet at church he traveled to many states. He served as head usher at Ocean Grove Annual Conference and was a volunteer, Bible teacher and director at Camp Swatara where he was volunteer of the year in 1987. He scratch built in his home, building trolleys and yip sticks. A feature on WGAL TV presented a story of his life interest in trolleys. The widower of Edith M. (Boyd) Groff, he was also preceded in death by a son, Donald Groff and brothers, Mahlon Groff and Paul Groff. Surviving are his children, Richard Groff and Mildred Long Rein; daughter-in-law, Anna Groff, all of Palmyra; 9 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and a great great grandson. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, February 8, 2009 at his church, 45 North Chestnut Street, Palmyra. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Spring Creek Cemetery, Hershey. [Harrisburg Patriot-News]
