He was born in Neuwallisdorf, Bohmen, Bohemia which is now called New Wallisdorf in the Czech Republic situated about 35 to 40 miles west and a little south of the Czech capital of Prauge (Praha) as it is spelled on a modern day map. He along with his parents, siblings and their families and many other family members departed Bremen, Hauve, Germany on April 18, 1867 aboard the ship "Johanne Wilhelmine" for America. They arrived in Baltimore, Maryland May 27, 1867. Their fare cost them $100.00 each. They traveled to Chicago where the men found work, then moved on to Pawnee County, Nebraska where his father and brothers Anton, Charles and Herman filed for homesteads.

He married Anna Loukata, probably in Bohemia shortly before they emigrated, and had the following children: Frances; Anna; Roslina; Josephina; Leopoltina; Bertha and Julia.
