In 1904, Pastor Eifert, who had been serving the Wilmot and Sisseton mission field in SD was called as the pastor of St John's. He accepted the call to St John's and was installed on 9-4-1904 by Past Geo Groh of Perham. He did the heating, cleaning, and ringing of the church bell during the years that no one else took the job.
Under his leadership, the congregation had its period of greatest development.
The minutes of the church meeting of Nov 1904 recorded the tradition of holding the Christmas eve Children's program. It is a tradition that has been observed for over 100 years at St John's.
It was decided to build a school building in 1907, which was taught by the Pastor Eifert from 1904 to 1918.
During his pastorate, St John's was also active in serving the church at large by permitting its pastor to serve preaching stations and congregations in the neighborhood. He served the preaching station at Oak Valley Twp, and he also began serving the Lutherans at Henning in the homes of the Lutherans there, which he did for almost five years. In 1910, the work was taken over by another pastor and a congregation was organized. At present, this flourishing duaghter is a self supporting congregation.
Eifert also served at New York Mills until a pastors from Wadena could take over.
In 1930, Pastor Eifert's income was $1000.00; however, due to poor economic times in 1932 and 1933, Eifert offered to reduce his salary to $800.00 to benefit the church.
After having served St John's for 30 years, he died unexpectedly at age 55 due to a heart attack.
In the 30 years of Eifert's service, he and his wife raised 12 children, including 7 sons: Wilhelm, Carl, Walter, Otto, Edgar, Erhard , August, and Lorenz . August was the only son who did not become a pastor.
His daughters' names were Madeline, Gertrude, Dora, and Agnes.
Lorenze Eifert helped serve the vacancy caused by his father's death.
Mrs. Eifert died at her daughter Madeline's home in CA and is buried there. Althought the cemetery tombstone at St John's records Emma's name, she is buried in CA.
