Son of Jacob Joseph Bottorff (1785-1875) and Mary Sarah Swiser (1789-1829). His siblings include: Morrison (b. 1815), Sally (b. 1817), Elvira (b. 1819), George Wesley (b. 1823), Amanda (b. 1825), Allen Wade (1825-1908), and James R. (1829-1881; also served in Co. F, 38TH IND INF). Milton, a carpenter & farmer by trade, married Miss Sarah Ann Wilson (1829-1915) on June 3, 1848 in Clark Co., IN. Together they had the following children: Simpson E. (1849-1919), Martha B. (b. 1852), Mary Francis (1854-1897), John W. (b. 1856), James H. (b. 1859), William Riley (1861-1942), Anna L. (1866-1954), Jennie Florence (1867-1973), Charles P. (1870-1902) and Wesley (b. 1881). The Bottorffs lived in Charlestown Twp., Clark Co., IN in 1850 and in Polk Run, Oregon Twp., Clark Co., IN during the 1860 & 1870 US Censuses.

Milton was 35 years old when he enlisted as a CPL in Co. F, 38th Indiana Infantry on Sept. 18, 1861 for a term of three years. He mustered out as a SGT on Sept. 17, 1864. He was approved for a federal veteran's pension on Apr. 14, 1881 (app. #419,121 cert. #314,542). His place of residence at the time of the 1900, 1910, & 1920 US Censuses was Haw Creek Twp., Bartholomew Co., IN. Milton was age 100 years, 6 months, and 13 days when he passed away.
