Susie was born to John Arnold Craig & Emma Lucinda Hicks Craig. Her only full sibling was Conley Arnold Craig. After her father's death in a sawmill accident, her mother married William Voyd McElroy, and they had 10 children, half brothers and sisters to Susie & Conley.

Susie married Nathan William Gartman, Oct. 12, 1908. They had nine children: George Elbert, Dessie Opal, William Arthur, Luther Jesse, Frank J., Estelle, Dorothy Dean,Clara Alice, and Ruby Alene.
