History - Henry had no education until he was nine years old. Then he was able to gain admission to a charity school, "The Blue Coat School," which he attended for four years, his only schooling. He learned quickly. Following this, he went to work to help his parents. An employee where he worked told him about the Mormon Church. He was baptized in 1849. He had lived with his brother George , but when George learned about the church, he offered Henry everything a young man could want to give up the church, when Henry refused, George turned him out without anything. Henry returned to his parents and tried to share the church with them with no success. He got Typhoid Fever about this time. The elders came and administered to him and by the next day he was well. It so impressed his parents that they were soon baptized. His trip from St. Louis up the river was a harrowing experience. He arrived at Winter Quarters without any money or clothes but was able to work his way west herding sheep for one of the families. He finally arrived in the Valley and met his parents, who had arrived earlier. He served in the militia for 18 years, and went to Provo with his parents during the Johnston's Army scare. Upon his return, he went to Logan to find a home. In 1860 he and his parents moved to Logan. He helped haul timber for the Logan Temple. He remained active in the church. In 1864 he went east and guided a group of saints to the valley. He served a term in the State Penitentiary for polygamy. He served a mission in England, was a bishop and later, a patriarch. He served the community, the church, and the people all his life.
