Samuel P O. Counts, County Treasurer Since 1898, Is Called By Death
New has been received here of the death of Samuel P. O. Counts, Treasurer of Mariposa county, which occurred at his house in Mariposa at 8 o'clock yesterday morning. Mr Counts had only been ill a few days and death was caused by dilation of the heart.
Mr Counts was a native of Arkansas and was aged 74 years. With his parents he came to California in the 60s, the family settling in Coulterville and when his father was elected County Treasurer in 1870 they moved to Mariposa. Mr Counts served as Deputy Clerk and Deputy Recorder for several years and for twenty-two years was a deputy under his father in the Treasurer's office. In 1898 upon the death of his father, he was appointed County Treasurer and had served continuously since that time. He was a candidate for re-election for the coming term and was unopposed. He was well known in Merced county and was held in the highest esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaintances here.
Surviving relatives are his widow and a sister, Mrs Duncan of Ukiah.
Funeral services under the auspices of the Mariposa Lodge of Odd Fellows will be held at the family home this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment will be in the IOOF cemetery at Mariposa.

Samuel was born in Nov 1851 in Arkansas, his father in Tennessee, mother in Kentucky, and he was county treasurer. Clara was born in Jun 1863 in Sweden, as were her parents, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1879, and had not given birth to any children. [1900 Federal Census]
