Rites Are Set For Planada Pioneer

MERCED, May 6 - Funeral services for Mrs. Cynthia Whealan, 87, Planada pioneer, will be held in the Welch & Robertson Chapel tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock with Rev. David McMartin officiating. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Mrs. Whealan died at Mercy Hospital early yesterday morning after a long illness. She was a native of Ohio and was brought to this state by her parents when 3 years old. Her family located in the Napa Valley, arriving there in 1854. Her husband, the late William Whealan, came to the Napa Valley in 1862 and five years later they were married.

They settled in Merced County in 1871, purchasing land nine miles east of here. When the Santa Fe laid its lines in the vicinity a station near the Whealan ranch was named Geneva, later being changed to Planada.

She leaves seven children, Mrs. R. R. Touhy, Santa Cruz; Mrs. Stephen Howard (Lauretta) Wills, Le Grand; Blaine Whealan, Oakland; Eugene Whealan, Planada; Mrs. Minnie Gilman, Merced; Mrs. Rufus Covert, Merced; Mrs. George Farr, Merced. Mrs. Whealan also leaves thirty four grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
