Lillian Myrtle Farnsworth was born on a farm 3.5 miles southeast of Edgeley, LaMoure County, North Dakota on August 4, 1926. Lillian was the second of five children born to Mabel Lois (Kime) and Elwin Harry Farnsworth. She attended rural school until November of 1937, when her father lost the farm in the Dust Bowl drought and the family moved into Edgeley. Lillian graduated from Edgeley High School in 1945 and went on to get her Teaching Certificate from Valley City (ND) State Teachers' College. She then taught school in Ray and Willow Bank Townships near Edgeley, before marrying Vernon "Roland" Turney in Edgeley on June 27, 1948.

Lillian and Roland Turney made their home in Edgeley and lived out the remainder of their lives in that town. From their marriage was born one child, Mishele Gay (Turney) Mathern, who as an adult settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. Lillian was a fastidious homemaker, who from her childhood was somewhat frail in health. She enjoyed designing original clothes and coiffures for dolls, which she sold, and was active in the Methodist church. She died on February 6, 1986 in a hospital in Ellendale, Dickey County, North Dakota after having suffered from cancer.
