Elwin Harry Farnsworth was born in the now-extinct town of Hamilton on the Mower County side of the county line in southeastern Minnesota. He was the youngest of five children born to the blacksmith Marshall L. and Mary Edith (Payne) Farnsworth. In 1902 Elwin moved with his family from Hamilton to Edgeley, LaMoure County, North Dakota, where his father started a blacksmith shop, then bought 1/4 section of land 3.5 miles southeast of Edgeley. After Elwin Farnsworth married Mabel Lois Kime on May 22, 1917 in Edgeley, Elwin and Mabel took over the family farm. Five children (Mabel, Lillian, Elwin Arthur, Shirley, and Gerald) were born on the farm to Elwin and Mabel Farnsworth. The Dust Bowl drove Elwin and family off the farm in November 1937, at which time they moved into a house in the town of Edgeley. There Elwin supported his family by taking whatever manual jobs became available, usually very temporary in nature. His health gradually deteriorated, and on January 17, 1952 he had a stroke and his family transported him to Jamestown, ND where he passed away. Elwin Harry Farnsworth was strong, intelligent, well-read, somewhat argumentative, and subject to dark moods caused by his difficult circumstances.
