Rochester, Minn. Sister Genevieve Speltz, 75, (formerly Sister Genovefa), a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minn., who served as an educator and music instructor, died on Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Assisi Heights, Rochester.

Born Mary Genevieve Speltz onf Feb. 28, 1924, in Altura, Minn., Sister Genevieve entered the Franciscan congretation from St. Mary's Parish, Winona. She made profession of vows in 1946 and began her teaching ministry in music at Queen of Angels Parish, Austin. From 1951-1967 she coordinated music classes, directed the orchestra and conducted choruses at St. Augustine/Pacelli High School, Austin. Assigned to the College of Saint Teresa, Winona from 1967-1984, she conducted the Teresan orchestra, an inter-collegiate concert choir, mixed choruses and taught violin. Class work at the College of Saint Teresa included Strings and Conducting; Education, History and Literature of Music.

She earned a master's degree of Christian Spirituality from Creighton University and worked in the Spiritual Life Office at Assisi Heights. She worked for two years as a pastoral associate at St. George Parish, University of Cincinnati Newman Center in Cincinnati. She also served as a member of the Executive Council for her Franciscan Congregation and was chairperson of the Contemplation and Celebration Committee.

She celebrated her golden jubilee in 1996 and came to Assisi Heights in 1998.

Sister Genevieve is survived by her Franciscan Community and by two brothers; The Most Reverend George Speltz of St. Cloud, Minn. and Edward Speltz of Minneapolis.

A Mass of Christian Burail will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights, with the Most Revererd George Speltz, former bishop of St. Cloud officiating. Friends may call at Assisi Heights at the wake service at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and until the time of service on Wednesday.
