He was born at Oak Ridge in Winona County, Jan. 17, 1874, son of John Speltz and Elizabeth Rivers. He taught school several years in Mount Vernon Township. After his marriage to Josephine Jung in 1904, he farmed near Altura until 1916.
Mr. Speltz managed the Altura Elevator Co., and was one of the organizers and president of the Rollingstone Telephone Co. and the Altura Power Co. He represented the Speltz Grain and Coal Co., of Albert Lea in Southeastern Minn. during the late 1920's. He also helped found in the 1920's the Altura Health Association, a cooperative group to provide a resident doctor for the community.
A pioneer member of St. Anthony's Church in Altura, Minn., and a charter member of Rollingstone St. Nicholas Society, Mr. Speltz has been a resident in Winona and a members of St. Mary's Parish since 1931. He was a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Mary's.
Survivors are: Five sons, Alfred, Los Angeles; the Rev. Richard Speltz, La Crescent; the Rt. Rev. George H. Speltz, Winona; Paul, U. S. Navy, Patuxent, Md.; and Edward, Minneapolis; two daughters, Mrs. Bert (Margaret) Wicker, Los Angeles; and Sister (Genevieve) Genevofa Speltz, O.S.F., and a brother, Louis, Altura.
The solemn requeim Mass will be offered by Msgr. Speltz, assisted by Father Speltz and the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Raymond Snyder, at St. Mary's Church, Winona, at 11 a.m Saturday, Bishop Edward A. Fitzgerald will give the Absolution. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call Thursday evening and Friday afternoon and evening at Rollingstone Funeral Home. The St. Nicholas Society will recite the Rosary Thursday evening at 8:30 and the Rosary will be recited again Friday evening at 8. Winona Daily News, Oct. 4, 1961
