Baptized in Catholic Church 5/31/1840 in Germany his father Conrad (Schermann) was farmer & Mother name Margaretha Klee a catholic couple.

Per affidavit dated 12/11/1915 Mathew at age of 75 requested birth date correction, appears records were showing birth date of 5/28/1840 instead of 5/27/1840. But what is interesting is following. I came to America from Germany with my parents in 1852, lived 1 year in New York City, the following year we moved to Pittsburg, Pa. and lived there until 1882. In 1860 I was unmarried and had no permanent home. My father Mathew and sister and myself is the whole family. Sister Catherine Obiger 83 yrs old lives in Pittsburg, Pa.

The following info from Western Union message to a Mrs. E.L. White, 1503 Broadway, Springfield Mo:

Mathew died at Gov't soldiers home in Kansas, buried at Springfield National Cemetery sec/plot 18, grave/lot 1014a

Records listed him as Catholic, 91yrs old, white, Civil. married, German, Farmer

A baptismal paper stating B:5/27/1840 notes his father name Conrad, but no mention of his mother.

Mathew enlisted in 8/1/1861 in Pittsburg, Pa. as Private in Company "B", 4th reg't Pennsyvania Cav. and was discharged in Washington D.C. on 5/26 or 5/28/1865. Record shows eyes were brown, hair black, complexion dark, height 5ft. 3inches, listed occupation as cooper.
