The son of German-born Henry & Sophia (Kauhns or Kuhns) Gast (1860 census claims Sophia was Pennsylvania-born), in 1860 he was a potter's apprentice living with his family in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Berks County April 24, 1861, mustered into federal service in Harrisburg that day as a private with Co. E, 14th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 7, 1861.
He married Sarah Jane Mullen December 31, 1861, and fathered William Henry (b. 09/06/62, 11/15/78), Ida S. (b. 11/06/66 - married George McClellan Gumpf), Franklin (b. 12/06/88), Charles Frederick (b. 10/23/71), Mary Ella (b. 06/29/74 - married William F. Stradtman), George W. (b. 05/28/76), and William A. (b. 10/12/77). Cause of his death is listed as "mitral disease of heart."
Note that there was another Civil War veteran from Lancaster named William Henry Gast. The other William was only eight months younger, also married a woman named Sarah, and is likewise buried in Lancaster Cemetery. For obvious reasons, the two veterans are often conflated.
