Perhaps due to the Depression, Sam took a number of odd jobs as the family drifted across Illinois, eventually settling in Monmouth, where he worked at Strand's Bakery. He and "Bert" remained in Monmouth long enough to raise their surviving children, then moved to Kansas for a time, then back east to Cincinnati, Ohio. During this time, Sam was employed as a teamster. Later, they relocated to the Boswell, Indiana area, perhaps to be closer to his and his wife's family in the area. During that time, Sam worked at a salvage yard.
Upon retirement, Sam and his wife longed to return to Monmouth. They bought a small parcel of land outside of Monmouth with the intention of building their retirement home. In the interim, they bought a small house in Monmouth and remodeled it to live in temporarily. Less than a year after moving, Sam suffered a massive heart attack without warning, leaving his wife, his son, his daughter, and a number of grandchildren.
