Sammie claimed his name was "just plain Sam", and was never given a middle name. His Kentucky birth certificate lists his name as Sammie, with no middle initial or name. He came to Illinois as a young teenager with his family in 1926, and suffered the loss of his parents less than two years later. At age 18, he married his young bride, Alberta Flo Richards. A year later, son Sammy Eugene, or "Gene", joined the family, followed by daughter Josephine Adeline, or "Jo", two years later. Son Harold Hobart was born prematurely two years after Jo, and only lived a few days.

Perhaps due to the Depression, Sam took a number of odd jobs as the family drifted across Illinois, eventually settling in Monmouth, where he worked at Strand's Bakery. He and "Bert" remained in Monmouth long enough to raise their surviving children, then moved to Kansas for a time, then back east to Cincinnati, Ohio. During this time, Sam was employed as a teamster. Later, they relocated to the Boswell, Indiana area, perhaps to be closer to his and his wife's family in the area. During that time, Sam worked at a salvage yard.

Upon retirement, Sam and his wife longed to return to Monmouth. They bought a small parcel of land outside of Monmouth with the intention of building their retirement home. In the interim, they bought a small house in Monmouth and remodeled it to live in temporarily. Less than a year after moving, Sam suffered a massive heart attack without warning, leaving his wife, his son, his daughter, and a number of grandchildren.
