Officer Bernard T. Cook, a Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Officer was shot and killed at 1410 North Sixteenth Street when he attempted to question two suspicious men.

Officer Cook was assigned to this location every Friday at 1445 hours to provide a police presence as checks were distributed at the Ely & Walker Trunk Factory. While he was at his post he noticed the two suspicious men and walked up to them. As he did so, the two tried to walk away. When Officer Cook called out to them, one of the men turned and fired 3 shots from a revolver, striking Officer Cook in the left arm, the center of his chest, and his heart. Officer Cook fell face down on the sidewalk and quickly rose to one knee and fired 5 shots at his attackers and then fell dead upon the sidewalk. Neither man was ever apprehended. Officer Cook died at the scene at 2:45 PM.

Officer Cook's remains were taken to Union Station where his casket was loaded upon a freight car and taken to the Alton Illinois area where his parents resided. Officer Cook was later buried at the St. Denis Cemetery.

Officer Cook, of 1522 No. 18Th St. lived with his aunt and had been with the agency for only eight months.

His wake was held at the Arthur J. Donnelly Funeral home located at 2039 Washington Ave.

Officer Cook was a veteran of World War I and enlisted on 04/09/1917 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on 02/18/1919. Officer Cook served in the 79Th Infantry Division.

Officer Cook was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Samuel and Mary (nee Patton) Cook.

Mother: Mary (Patton) Cook born July 1867 in Indiana
Parents were married in 1892.
