Old Soldiers' Claims Mr McKerrow, the Commissioner appointed to enquire into claims under Naval and Military Settlers and Volunteers Land Act, sat in Woodville yesterday and heard evidence in support of the following claims:-

* R. W. Thompson, service in Taranaki
* Joseph Holloway, service in Featherston Rifles
* James Greenaway, service in the 65th Regiment in New Zealand
* JAMES O'BRIEN, service in the 83rd Regiment
* John Morgan, service in the 65th Regiment
* George James Goldfinch, service in the Pahautanui Rifles
* Henry Hawken, service in the Taranaki Volunteers and Hawke's Bay Militia
* Enoch Walker, service in Militia at Greytown
. * Enoch's brother Thomas Walker (1831-1904), had the "British Volunteer Hotel" in Greytown

O'BRIEN - At Woodville, on 8th October, James O'Brien; aged 70 year
An old identity of Woodville, named James O'Brien died somewhat suddenly this morning. Deceased was 70 years of age. He has been in the colony for 34 years, during 20 years of which time he has resided in Woodville. He was an old soldier. In the early days of his career he was an officer's servant in the Crimea and while acting as such was entitled to the Victoria Cross. His master was severally wounded during an engagement and O'Brien ruched into the middle of the field and securing his master, Carried him to a place of safeyl, Sad to sat, the wounded man did not live many minutes. As O'Brien was not enrolled as a solder the cross could not be awarded to him. He also served through the Maori war, for which he was awarded a medal. Other medals were held by deceased.
Funeral Notice The friends of the late James O'Brien are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, which will leave his late residence, Bakers-town, for the Woodville Cemetery, to-morrow (Tuesday) at 2 o'clock.
