Egje was born in Arkel, the Netherlands, to Pieter and Gijsbertje (van Houwelingen) deJong. She and her family, minus brother,Jan and his family, immigrated to the United States in 1866 sailing on the S S England. Elbert, Jacob, Dirk (his wife Kornelia), Neldus, Maria, Pieter Jr, and Gysbertje all left the Netherlands. There was an outbreak of cholera on the ship and Elbert, Neldus, Dirk, Kornelia, and a nephew, Arie, died. They put in to McNab's Island in Halifax Harbor to get medical help. Those in the deJong family who were living were placed on the island and lived in tents while the ship was being cleaned. Then they sailed on to New York where they were quarantined for 3 weeks. When they were released they took the train to Chicago and another train to Eddyville, IA, then finished the trip to Pella IA by horse drawn wagon. Two brothers, Gijsbert and Martinus, along with Martinus wife, Grietje and son, Peter, had come the year before and were waiting for the family in Pella.

April 7, 1868 Egje and T. Albert Tysseling were married by Rev. Egbert Winter, pastor of the First Reformed Church of Pella. They had two sons - Peter and Herman Martinus and six daughters - Hendrika (who only lived about 2 years), Gysbertje, Hendrika W., Pieternella, Wilhelmina (Minnie) and Antonia H.

They farmed several farms in Black Oak Township, and in 1901, they retired and moved to Pella.

Egje is described as a woman of strong Christian character and faith, always true to the teachings of the Bible.
