Son of Rebecca Lazar and Isador Bernhardt, and the grandson of Mary (Miriam) Schwartz Lazar and Israel Lazar.

Adolph emigrated in 1900, and in the census that year he was working as a clerk at the age of 13 (he was a little older if he really was born in 1885), living with his grandmother, and his uncle John Lazar.

Adolph and his wife had five children: Helen, Morris and Gustav (twins), Marcus, and Ruth.

Adolph and Pauline's oldest child Helen Packman died in 1983, and was buried at United Hebrew in St. Louis, findagrave memorial #6018260. Their son Marcus Bernhardt's memorial #6018249. No information on the last child Ruth Bernhardt.

Pauline died early, and Adolph remarried and was survived by Rose, according to his death certificate.
