ELLMAKER, John Leonard, born in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany in 1697; son of Elias Ellmaker and Maria Magdalena Bremer; received a good education; moved in 1725 from Nuremberg to Frankenthal, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, where he worked as a baker; member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frankenthal; married Anna Margaretta Hornberger 6 May 1726 in Frankenthal; departed for America a few weeks later, arriving in Philadelphia; settled in a log cabin in Lancaster, Lancaster, Pennsylvania; moved about 1730 to Earl Township; lived on 220 acres of land in the Pequea Valley; naturalized 19 May 1739 by an act of the General Assembly meeting in Philadelphia; took an indentured servant into his household 1 Jun 1768; member of the Lutheran Church in New Holland; said to have a proud and quiet deportment and to be faithful and industrious; died in Earl Township in 1782; interment in Ellmaker Graveyard in Earl Township.
