Alice "Allie" Olson, 93, Alexandria, MN
1914 - 2007

Alice "Allie" Olson, 93, of Alexandria, and a long-time resident of Barrett, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.

Alice Margaurite "Allie" Olson was born on April 24, 1914, the twin daughter of Alfred and Elsie (Dahl) Albertson in Doran. She was baptized and confirmed at Vuku Lutheran Church of rural Doran, and graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1934. She worked at the courthouse in Breckenridge for eight years.

On Sept, 7, 1941, Allie married Ingvald Olson. From 1941 to 1943, she worked at the Citizens State Bank in Barrett. While Inky was in the service, Allie and their son, Larry, moved to San Diego, Calif., where she worked at First National Bank.

After Inky's discharge, the family returned to Barrett, where she then spent the next 21 years raising five children, volunteering at many community organizations, and actively teaching Sunday school at both Our Saviors Lutheran Church and Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett. She went back to work in 1964, as deputy treasurer at the Grant County Courthouse and retired in 1979.

She and Inky shared 64 wonderful years of marriage. Inky died Dec. 8, 2005.

Allie's love for people and her community of Barrett was exhibited throughout her entire life. She was always gathering a group of people together to clean the beaches, parks and pavilion. She spent multiple hours as a volunteer at the Barrett Care Center where she loved reading to the residents. She spent her entire life bringing rolls, flowers or whatever cheer she could share with anyone who needed it.

Even the neighborhood kids waited for the 3 o'clock snack break at the Olson house during the summer. Allie's flowers, yard work, fishing, community projects, and volunteering kept her busy and active throughout her life. She loved to bowl until arthritis forced her to quit. She was never too tired or hurt too much to do a good deed.

Allie was an active member of Peace Lutheran Bible class, the Barrett Study Club, American Legion Auxiliary (more than 50 years), president of the Barrett Senior Citizens group, and the Barrett C & C.
One of the most difficult things she had to do was giving up her yard and home when she and Inky moved to the Barrett Assistance Living Community. She spent the last two years at Clearwater Suites in Alexandria where even there, she was known for her hugs, smiles and for never complaining. She was treated as a mom and loved by everyone there.

Survivors include two sons, Larry (fiancé, Laura Blevins) of Rapid City, S.D., and Danny (fiancé, Tina Gregory) of Sedalia, Colo.; two daughters, ReNae (Ron) Nelson of Alexandria and Kayla (Howard) Johnson of Brooten; her twin sister, Ella "Mickey" Hoobler of Richland, Wash.; grandchildren, Meghan Olson, Bradley (Maureen) Olson, Brady (Michael) Martucci, and Cary (Ryan) Lynch, Jason (Kelli) Alstead and Nichole' Alstead (fiancé, Ed Thornton), and Nathan Johnson; five great-grandchildren, Kennedi and Tucker Alstead, Cavanaugh Martucci, and Cameron and Aidan Olson; and many nieces and nephews.

Allie was preceded in death by her husband, Inky; her parents, four brothers, Lawrence "Rudy", Norris, Kenneth, and Gordon Albertson; and a son, Keith Wayne, who died at the age of 17.
