Bernie Peyton shared her musical gifts.

PORTAGE - Bernie Elizabeth Peyton shared her musical gifts with the Portage
Community Bible Church for 30 years. Mrs. Peyton led the church choir and
played piano and organ at church services every week.
"She was a perfectionist," said her son, Dale Peyton of Portage.
Mrs. Peyton, 89, a longtime Portage resident, died March 23 at Porter
Memorial Hospital.
Her son said she always maintained high standards in the musical portion of
the service and even liked to rehearse the choir's entrance into the church.
Her son said when Mrs. Peyton was attending college, she was known for her
excellent soprano voice.
And her church activities weren't limited to music. Mrs. Peyton also devoted
her time as a church deaconess, took part in the mission program and other
activities.
Her son said she loved both music and teaching. She was a retired teacher
from Portage Township Schools, where she taught music, art and girls' physical
education from 1939 to 1963.
Her caring for family and friends and her strong faith in God are just two
of the traits for which she will most be remembered.
"She was always helping others," her son said.
Katherine Warren of Lake Station reminisced about her 50-year friendship
with Mrs. Peyton.
"Bernie was a kind and considerate person, and she always wanted to help
everybody," she said. "She believed God could do anything, and she was willing
to be the person for Him to work through."
Mrs. Peyton also enjoyed working with crafts, and her intricately stitched
quilts are family heirlooms. In her younger days, Mrs. Peyton also used her
sewing talents to make her own clothes.
She was a member of the Indiana Retired Teacher's Association and the
Portage Women's Christian Club.
"Bernie was a very helpful person," her friend said.
Mrs. Peyton is survived by one son, Dale (Elaine) Peyton of Portage; two
sisters, Frances (James) Horner of Indianapolis, and Naomi (George) Hinshaw of
Oklahoma City, Okla.; and two granddaughters.
Services were held March 26 at the Portage Community Bible Church with the
Rev. Tim Robinson officiating. Interment took place at Calvary Cemetery. Engel
Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
