Emma Lee Pike was the eighth of eight children born to Jerome Bonapart Pike & Ann Eliza Mattingly. She married Benedict Lee Hardesty in Kentucky and moved to a farm in Tulsa, OK soon after. Benedict worked for the Texaco refinery as a pipeliner. They moved to California in 1953. They had 4 sons and 3 daughters: Benedict Lorenzo, Jerome Lee, Lyona, Vivian, Joseph Verland, Darnell Eugene and Regina.

She died at age 81 of heart trouble.
