Sadly, his father died in a Civil War battle on Thanksgiving Eve November of 1862. Byrd was just two years old and his sister only six months of age.

NOTE***
To say he was interesting is to do him an injustice. Married 06 Jan 1880 to his first wife; he was married a fourth time 12 Jan 1897. His second wife had given birth to three children, a daughter and two sons, who did not survive. The last son died in childbirth along with his mother. Married a third time he had now fathered seven children; two daughters and two sons still living. No indication of what was to come. His eighth child was born in 1898 and over the course of the next 26 years he would father 15 more children.
