Smith Watson obituary, Waynesburg Republican, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, 2 February 1922, page 1, column 7.

"Well Known Oil And Gas Operator Takes His Own Life

Smith Watson, In Ill Health for Some Time, Because Despondent and Cut His Throat With Razor.

Smith Watson, a successful and widely known oil and gas operator, took his own life on Monday morning by cutting his throat with a razor in the bath room at his home on Ross street. Physicians were summoned at once but his death occurred shortly after, at 11:30 o'clock.

He had been in poor health for a year or two and lately had grown quite despondent which no doubt affected his mind.

Mr. Watson was a son of Robert and Catharine Anderson Watson and was born at Holbrook, July 31, 1875. He was successful farmer and stock buyer for several years.

In 1918 he became interested in oil developments and removed to Waynesburg. He acquired large oil acreage in Greene and Washington counties and was very successful in all his operations and was the principal owner of the Meek and Wright wells in the Fonner field. He was a member of the First Christian church of Waynesburg and at the time of his death was a member of the official board of the church.

Beside his parents he is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Garnet Bristor, of Waynesburg, and the following brothers and sisters: S. S. Watson, Mrs. George Church, Mrs. Robert Throckmorton and Mrs. W. E. Higgins, of Waynesburg, Rev. George W. Watson, of Uniontown, John J. Watson and Dr. J. H. Watson, of Jeannette, Pa.

Funeral services were held in the First Christian church Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. N. Scholes. Interment was made in Rosemont cemetery, Rogersville."
