"One of County's Two Civil War Vets Dead

Robert Watson, 95 Years Old, Passes Away At Holbrook Home

Greene County's surviving veterans of the Civil War were reduced to one with the death of Robert Watson, aged 95, well known retired farmer and stock buyer, who passed away somewhat unexpectedly at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, April 23, 1942, at his home at Holbrook. Mr. Watson's death leaves Basil Lemley, 100-year old Mt. Morris resident, as the only surviving Civil War veteran in the county.

Mr. Watson had not been in good health lately, but his condition did not indicate any cause for alarm and he had celebrated his 95th birthday less than two weeks ago. Mr. Watson was born April 12, 1847, in the Zollarsville community and was a son of the late John and Anna Almost Watson. At the age of 12 years he united with the Winnett Chapel Methodist Church and had been an active worker in the church and Sunday School all his life. He was a charter member of the Holbrook Christian Church, with which he had been affiliated for more than 70 years. He served as an elder of the church for many years and at the time of his death was an honorary elder.

Mr. Watson had not quite reached his 18th birthday when he enlisted March 10, 1865, in Company D, Second Pennsylvania Cavalry, for service in the Union Army. He served until the end of the war and was mustered out of service at Louisville, Kentucky.

During his active life he engaged extensively in stock and wool buying and in that capacity became widely acquainted in Greene and adjacent counties. Mr. Watson started his stock buying career before there were railroad facilities for transporting livestock to market from Greene County and was probably the only stock buyer in this section who could recall the days when livestock was driven over the mountains to the Baltimore market. Mr. Watson had personally made such trips by horseback driving his stock to Baltimore.

He was married December 30, 1869, to Catherine Anderson, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Mr. Axtell, one of that era's prominent ministers of this section. Mrs. Watson died January 12, 1933. To this union were born nine children, of whom four survive as follows: John I. Watson, of Holbrook; Mrs. Robert Throckmorton, with whom Mr. Watson had resided at the old Holbrook homestead since his wife's death; Rev. G. W. Watson, in Florida, and Dr. J. H. Watson, of Jeannette. There are several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon, April 26. Short services will be held at the late home at 1:30 o'clock, followed by further rites at 2 o'clock in the Holbrook Christian Church with his pastor, the Rev. F. H. Gerrett, of Rogersville, in charge. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Rogersville. Friends will be received at the late home. Funeral arrangements are in charge of S. P. Weaver, Waynesburg funeral director."
