When my cousins, Dale Daley, Ricky Ford and I met in Perry Co., AR many, many years ago, Ricky shared copies of the attached picture of James Baldwin Womack with Dale and me. The original was made by his grandmother, Viola (nee Cunningham) Ford. Ricky's father was Leroy Ford.

James was living with his daughter, Lydia Dara Womack and her husband Charles "Charlie" Meese and their sons, James Herman and Noah Meese at "Meese's Bend" (Rankin Township) in Perry Co., AR when he died.

James Baldwin Womack married 1st ca. 1852 in Arkansas the daughter of Isaac Carter and Ruth Kilgore, Evaline Carter.

He married 2nd on 26 Oct 1885 Perry Co., AR, the widow of Robert P. Edlin, Sarah Garland (nee Stover) Edlin, daughter of John D. Stover and Catherine "Kitty" Garland. As Sarah G. Womack, she filed for her Civil War widow's pension based on the service of her first husband, Robert P. Edlin on 24 Apr 1889 in Perry Co., AR. This marriage ended when James filed for divorce against Sarah for desertion. Sarah is buried in Edlin Cemetery, Perry Co., AR with her 1st husband, Robert P. Edlin.

On 12 Jan 1863 James enlisted as a Pvt. for a period of three years in Co. E., 2nd Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry Volunteers, Union Army. He was promoted to Sgt, and in his Declaration of Recruit document in Springfield, MO, he was 32 years old., 5'10" tall, had dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair. He signed his recruiting papers with an "X". While on special detail, under the orders of Brig. Gen John B. Sanborn, who commanded the Union troups of Southwest District of Missouri and Northern District of Arkansas, James was listed as AWOL by his regular unit. He was actually guarding the ferry on the White River in AR. James mustered out in Memphis, TN on 28 May 1865. He filed for his CW pension 8 Aug 1889.
