Died of Diphtheria during the epidemic that swept through the "Home" in the winter of 1889-90. Joseph was the son of A. L. and Alice Chenowith and born in Bournville, Ross Co. Ohio. His father served as a Captain in Co. "L" in the 56th Ohio Voluntary Infantry. Joseph along with his brothers Charles and Robert entered the OS&SO Home on 8 Oct 1887.Obituary Xenia Gazette Feb. 28, 1890:
Joseph Edward Chenoweth, a promising boy of 13 years, died at the Orphans' Home hospital of diphtheria, Thursday evening about six o'clock. He leaves two brothers in the Home, Walter and Robert, and the mother, the only parent, who lives at Good Hope, O., is now at the institution. The burial took place in the Home cemetery to-day at 10 o'clock.
