Doctor's Rites Are Set Today

NOGALES, Ariz., Aug. 22 - (AP) Forty-five honorary pallbearers were named to serve at services for Dr. W. F. Chenoweth, pioneer Santa Cruz county physician and surgeon, to be held here at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
He died at Santa Barbara, Calif., Wednesday, at the age of 75. He went to the coast resort several weeks ago for a rest and a vacation after being in poor health for some time.
After services at Sacred Heart church, burial will be in the old Odd Fellows Cemetery. Leading citizens were named as active pallbearers.
Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, Dr. Chenoweth was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati medical school. He came to Southern Arizona in 1898 as a surgeon for Santa Fe railroad, which then was contemplating construction of a line to Guaymas.
Surviving relatives are his wife, Mrs. Laura Chenoweth; a son, William Chenoweth, employee of the state highway department; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Bettwy, Santa Cruz county recorder, and Mrs. Louis Page, Fort Sam Houston, Tex., and a brother, Harry of New York.

12/29/2014 - Contributor Sam Bettwy ([email protected])offers the following:
"Mary's father's middle name was Fritz, not Frederick."

12/23/20 Contributor Jon Egge (46871028) adds the following:
"- in a document handwritten by William F. Chenoweth to provide data so his daughter could join the DAR and his sons could join something called the Loyal Legion. In this document William F. calls himself William Fitzwilliam, by his own hand. His son, Joseph William's obit gives his name as Fitzwilliam and HIs grandson was names William Fitzwilliam Chenoweth, II (we corresponded for a while). The death certificate is mistaken."
Note: No one has been able to provide me with a copy of the document cited above and I have not been able to independently verify Dr. Chenoweth's middle name other than what is stated on his death certificate. Therefore I will leave his middle initial as it is on his marker per FAG guidelines.

Primary Source: California Death Records shows full name as William Frederick Chenoweth.

11/12/23 Contributor Travis C (51667711) adds the following:
"I am the great-grandson of William Fitzwilliam Chenoweth. I have several documents, both typed and handwritten, as well as his original glass placard from his office as a medical provider. My father's middle name was Fitzwilliam, like his grandfather's. I have also given my son the same middle name as my father left quite an impression on me regarding what I've been told about his grandfather. I would be happy to send copies of the materials that I have. I know there is a street in Nogales, AZ, which is Chenoweth Avenue, that I was told was named after Dr. William Fitzwilliam Chenoweth, due to his work as a medical doctor in Nogales, AZ."
