George Isaac Austin spent his early years in Milwaukee WI. He moved West with his family to Nebraska around 1884. It was here he met and married Virta Blanche Frazey on July 14 1897 in Oceola Nebraska. He and Virta farmed in the York & Benedict area. it was here they started their family Their first was born in 1898. It was difficult to make a living farming on rented land and so they decided to homestead property in Northern Minnesota in Sago Township southern Itasca County. They moved to Sago Township in 1906, cleared some land and built a small log home on the North side of what is now Austin Lake. George had purchased a steam tractor in Milwaukee and had it shipped to Swan River MN where he unloaded it and drove it through the woods to Austin Lake. It was used to clear some of the land and later used to power a sawmill which was very benificial to his family and neighbors.
As with most farmers of that period George was an accomplished blacksmith, horseman, harness maker, rope splicer, and threshing machine expert. When harvest time came around George was the man in charge of the setup and operation of the threshing operation.
George was highly respected by his friends and neighbors. With his mild manor and sense of humor and general knowledge
he set a fine example for his Grandchildren especially his Grandsons.
When he was 79 years old he broke a leg cleaning the barn and the leg had to be amputated. Because of his age and complications with phneumonia it was just too traumatic for him and he died. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son Lauran He was survived by his wife Virta, sons Clarence (Martha) & Everett (Berniece), daughters Goldie (Arthur)Rima, Isabelle (Earl) Brown, and numerous grandchildren.
