Martine was born in Oslo (formerly Christinia), Norway, the daughter of Peder Halseth and Marthe Bjorgesen(1). She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at age fifteen and emigrated to the Salt Lake Valley, arriving November 8, 1865 when she was 18 years old. On April 10, 1866 she married Brenneman Bitner as his second wife. Brenneman's first wife, Mary Esther, died September 20, 1866 at age 20. About three years later Brenneman married his third wife Sarah Osguthorpe.)

Martina was the mother of twelve children: Brenneman Barr Halseth, Anna, Elizabeth Martha, Luella, Alice, Susannah, Jeanette, Ardella, Florence, Moroni Halseth (Roy), Erma, and Madeline.
