A native of Haywood County and raised in Shoal Creek community in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Belle and Jerry Howell.
In his youth he worked as a car mechanic and as a carpenter's helper.
He worked for American Enka for 41 years and ran their engineering development shop.
He was a longtime active member of Montmorenci United Methodist Church in Candler.
Surviving are his wife of more than 70 years, two daughters and four grandchildren.
Services were at Montmorenci United Methodist Church.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
