son of William P (Parker) Brown and Charlotte Parker. Emigrated with family from Liverpool, England aboard the ship Germanicus in 1854. Arrived in New Orleans and traveled to Missouri, where his family was stricken with cholera; he lost his mother Charlotte and two siblings, Emma and Joseph. He enlisted in the Civil War as a drummer boy, without his parents consent, but eventually returned home. His family stayed in MIssouri for about 9 years before joining the A.H. Patterson company traveled to Utah. He served in the Blackhawk Indian War from 1866-1867. On June 29, 1869, John married Esther Sargent. 11 children were born to this union (John Joseph, William James, George Heber, Charlotte Ada, Florence Elizabeth, Junius Henry, Amos Nephi, Enoch, Esther, Hyrum Leslie, and Alfred Wesley).
