Col. Robert Carr, served in the United States Army during the War of 1812. He married (spouse unknown) with whom he had a son, John Bartram Carr. His second wife was Ann M. (Bartram) Carr. Together they continued the nursery business began by Ann's grandfather, John Bartram, and continued by her father, John Bartram, Jr. They, with his son, John, operated Bartram's Garden from 1813 to 1850. Col. Carr introduced the poinsettia to the United States on June 6, 1829 at what was to become the Philadelphia Flower Show. Prior to his second marriage he was a distinguished printer. Two of his works were Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology and Blackstone's Commentaries in five volumes.
