The son of George & Barbara (Snyder) Barnet, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The family is in the 1860 census as "Barnitz."

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9, 1864, as a private with Co. C, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1865.

He married Cassandra Dintaman and fathered Jennie K. (b. 07/30/69 - married Amos Dunkle). He later moved to Steelton, Dauphin County, where he became a member of Lascomb Post No. 351, G.A.R., and where he died at his daughter Jennie's home following a lengthy illness. All of his obituaries spell his surname "Barnett," but his pension index spells it as shown on the tombstone.
