Samuel Newcomb was born in County Derry, Ireland the son of Elias Newcome and Hannah Weymouth.

Sam served as a private in Company 2, 10th Pennsylvania Infantry, serving in the Revolutionary War from April 9, 1777 to Jan 27, 1781.

He died in the home of his son, John Newcome, at Frostburg, Perry Twp., Jefferson Co., PA.

He was married to Nancy Fritz.

He was with Gen. George Washington at the Crossing of the Delaware on December 15, 1776. Enlisted as a private on April 9, 1777 for 3 years, serving in Capt. Robert Samples Co. of foot [?], Lt. Col. Hubley's (6th) Regiment, 10th PA Line commanded by Col. Joseph Penrose. He was at Charleston, SC with his brother "when it capitulated" (Newcomb bk). He participated in the battles of Brandywine, Princeton, Paoli, Germantown, and was in camp at Morristown in 1776 at Valley Forge during the terrible winter of 1777-1778. He distinguished himself with heroism at Monmouth (1778) and was at Morristown Camp a second time, participating in the Battle of Bound Brook. Discharged at Trenton, NJ by Gen. Wayne on January 27, 1781. He was granted a pension (#S40200) on July 7, 1819 under the Act of 1818. On June 26, 1820 he made an affidavit that the only property he owned was "an old Saddle, one pot, and one set of horse spurs."
