LEONA T. BACKUS, 90, died at 8:55 a.m. Nov. 6, 2003, at VanCrest Health Care Center.

She was born Dec. 26, 1912, in Cloverdale to Louis and Anna Kemper Ricker, who preceded her in death. On June 27, 1934, in Ottoville, she married Harry G. Backus, who died Nov. 30, 1967.

Mrs. Backus had been cafeteria manager at Delphos St. Johns School for 30 years. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos, where she had been food chairperson for the fall festival and prepared meals for weddings and other celebrated occasions for more than 50 years. She had been a poll worker for the Allen County Election Board for 50 years. She had served as a member of the St. Rita's Medical Center visiting team. In 1997, she was selected by the Delphos Herald as Woman of the Year.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald (Dottie) Backus and Stanley (Jan) Backus, both of Delphos; a daughter, Janet (James) Donahue of Maumee; two brothers, Richard (Jeanette) Ricker of Clyde and Harold (Kathy) Ricker of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister, Mary (Arthur) Grothouse; and 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Backus; a daughter, Louise Williams; a son-in-law, Kenneth Williams; four brothers, Isadore, Gilbert, Marcus and Alfred Ricker; and three sisters, Emma Foster, Rita Steinbrenner and Rose Ricker; and two brothers-in-law, Frank Foster and Eugene Steinbrenner.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. The Rev. Thomas Gorman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Kolkmeyer-Helmkamp-Orians Funeral Home, Delphos, where a parish wake service will be held at 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John Parish Foundation or the charity of the donor's choice.
