Woodrow Wilson "Bill" Grogan was born on April 30, 1913, to Charles and Lena (Zimmerman) Grogan on a farm northwest of Chandler. He attended country school District #94 and continued to farm with his family as a young man. On May 25, 1942, Bill was drafted into the U.S. Army. He received his basic training in Fort Crook, Nebraska and was then sent overseas as a Radio Operator. He was stationed in New Guinea, Luzon, Bismarck Archipelago and the southern Philippines. Bill received several medals and honors, such as, the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Service Medal, American Theatre Service metal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Purple Heart, for a leg wound he received while in the Philippines. On October 30, 1945, he was discharged and returned to Chandler and the family farm. Bill farmed with his mother and brothers until 1988, retiring in 1993, and moving into Chandler in the fall of that year. He then moved to Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton, Minnesota in 1998, and lived there until his death on Monday, January 27, 2003, at the age of 89. The two things Bill enjoyed the most in his life were farming and talking about farming. He also did enjoy reading and keeping up with current events and news both around the world and locally. He was an American Legion member and an associate member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Chandler where he was baptized in the Christian faith in October of 2002. Bill is survived by one sister Fern Gunderson, Chandler, MN; one sister-in-law Sybil Grogan, Chandler, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents; four brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 31, 2003, 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Chandler, MN with Pastor Bob Moritz officiating. Organist was Mary Borgstahl. Honorary casket bearers were Frank Post, Ben Post, Dave Sankey, John Vis, Hank Van Ruler and Marion Van Ruler. Interment is in Hillside Cemetery, Chandler, MN.
